Londoners can now quickly search online for large and small events where they would like to give their time. The London events volunteering calendar was launched by GLV during Volunteers' Week 2008 in recognition of the vast energy, knowledge and experience that volunteers bring to the running of events in the capital.
There are many roles for volunteers to do such as: hosting VIPs, registering participants, answering queries, setting up equipment, mashalling, handing out medals and goody bags, supporting people with disabilities, fundraising, First Aid, marketing, interpreting, or leading a team of volunteers.
Charities, social enterprises and public bodies can apply to add their events provided they involve volunteers, promote citizenship or civic pride, and benefit the community or public. Volunteers must not be taking the place of paid staff.
"7.5 million people live in London, 2.5 million volunteer. This is the first time that London has hade one place to visit and find volunteering events across the Capital. The question we tried to answer is 'How can we match up London events with people who would like to help make them happen?'." Kerry Tweed, Director of Greater London Volunteering
"The constant buzz in our city owes much to the range of events that are hosted in London every year and made possible because of the many dedicated volunteers who ensure they run smoothly. Winning the right to host the 2012 Games has boosted the need for not only experienced volunteers, but Londoners who believe they have what it takes to volunteer. I urge Londoners to get involved now in some of the truly memorable events planned for now, leading up to the Games and beyond." Boris Johnson, Mayor of London
"London hosts many of the worlds most exciting events and there are many extraordinary experiences to be had through volunteering. The commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers is needed to make these events a success and is truly vital to building strong communities. The London Events Volunteering Calendar will make it much easier for people to get involved, making sure that London stays as vibrant and exciting as it is and giving volunteers new skills and experiences." Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector
"There is a huge opportunity for people to help out before and during the Games. Playing any part in staging the Games is a once an a lifetime opportunity and as many people as possible should have the chance of being able to experience it." Cllr Paul McCannah, Chairman of London Councils' Grants Committee

Most clubs would not exist without volunteers. They bring vast energy, knowledge and experience to the running of sports clubs. In recognition that volunteers are sport’s heroes, Greater London Volunteering (GLV) launched special resources on www.2012volunteeringlegacy.org.uk and publicity materials.
Successful clubs need a variety of volunteer roles to help achieve their goals. These include familiar roles like coaching and equipment management, and less obvious roles such as website development, publicity, catering, fundraising and membership services to name a few. Through the Sporting Heroes Campaign and the get setgo! e-pack for clubs, organisations and events we aim to help London sports clubs recruit, manage and support volunteers.
Specially developed resources include
"Sports events are not just about the talented players on the pitch. Even the London 2012 Games needs 70,000 volunteers to make sure it happens. This website brings together practical advice to support clubs to show that everyone can be a Sporting Hero off the pitch. From booking the facilities to inviting the spectators, to coaching the kids and promoting sport to new communities." Kerry Tweed, Director of Greater London Volunteering
"It is important that the 2012 Games leve a lasting legacy benefiting London's diverse communities. Getting involved with helping local grass roots sports clubs is an excellent way anyone can help achieve that legacy." Cllr Paul McCannah, Chairman of London Councils' Grants Committee
"Greater London Volunteering's new website will be a great resource for sports clubs that want to recruit and get the best from volunteers. Many of today's sports stars took their first steps thanks to volunteers and many more people today are enjoying sport because volunteers make it possible. Volunteers across London play a critical role in binding our communities together. I hope this website will enable more people to get involved." Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector
