What should a volunteer role include?

Providing role outlines lets volunteers know exactly what their contribution will be. Create effective and rewarding roles for your club, organisation or event by including:

  • The name of the role
  • Who will be the person’s line manager
  • Why the role exists and what it aims to do
  • List of task(s) to be carried out
  • Hours per week asked for
  • Other relevant information such as training, expenses, lunch
  • Skills, qualifications, experience needed

Top tips

  • Try to involve existing colleagues in identifying potential tasks and roles
  • You can group tasks into different roles if they naturally fall together
  • Is the wording clear? Is it interesting? Will it motivate people? Is it realistic?
  • Be clear about what skills, experience or qualifications are needed for the role. Are there skills you consider essential or can some be learned through training?
  • Think through other information that is important for the role. For example, who will manage or support the volunteer? What expenses can you reimburse? Will they get training? How many hours each week does the role require?
  • Develop a document that outlines all of the information you’ve gathered. Make sure it is accessible to everyone and is set out clearly
